US, Bakersfield: Bakersfield 8-Year-Old Found Dead in Hotel Bathtub 2 Charged With Torture and Murder
Bakersfield, United States - August 03, 2025 08/02/2025 06:00 pm GMT-0700 BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – An 8-year-old was found dead inside a hotel room bathtub. Just after 5:30 p.m., the Bakersfield Police Department responded to the La Quinta Inn located in the 3200 block of Riverside Drive for reports of a possible medical emergency, according to police. The reporting party called officials, saying she had received secondhand information that an 8-year-old girl may be dead inside a bathtub. Police responded and entered the room, then forced entry into the bathroom after getting no response. The child was found dead in the bathtub with substantial trauma to her body, according to the Bakersfield Police Department. Officials learned the girl had been abandoned. After further investigation, two adults were taken into custody. Ray Mata Jr., 31, of Bakersfield, and Graciela Bustamonte, 27, of Delano, were identified as suspects and booked into jail on charges of murder, torture, and multiple counts of child abuse. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Bakersfield Police responded to an unknown incident at the La Quinta Inn, where a crime scene investigation was underway, according to initial reports. Officers, along with a crime scene unit, were seen at the hotel, with police tape blocking off part of the second floor. At least one officer was positioned outside a specific room holding the scene. Details regarding the nature of the investigation or the time of the incident have not been released.
