Around 8:50 PM local time on June 30, 2025, Japan Airlines Flight 8696, a Boeing 738 aircraft en route from Shanghai to Tokyo Narita Airport, made an emergency landing at Kansai International Airport in Osaka.

According to reports from Japan’s Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism and other authorities, the aircraft triggered a “pressurisation system malfunction” warning during the flight, and a suspected cabin depressurisation occurred. The pilot declared an emergency to air traffic control and diverted to land at Kansai Airport. All 191 passengers and crew onboard were unharmed and showed no signs of physical discomfort.

Radar data showed that the aircraft was originally cruising at over 11,000 metres around 6:53 pm, but suddenly descended rapidly to an altitude of just over 3,200 metres within 10 minutes, with the steep descent lasting more than 10 minutes.

Some passengers reported that oxygen masks dropped during the rapid descent and everyone was using them. The cabin was eerily silent during the incident. One passenger said they even wrote a will, were on the verge of tears, told their family to take care of their mother, and shared all their insurance and bank card PINs.

Japan Airlines is currently investigating the exact cause of the incident.
