Motorcycle rider injured when steel bar falls from truck hitting her in face
This is the shocking moment a motorcycle rider was injured when steel bars fell from a pickup truck roof and hit her face.
Wanna Angkamart, 21, was turning onto a main road when she was struck by the construction materials that slid from the top of the vehicle in Khon Kaen, Thailand.
Dramatic dashcam footage shows the female rider waiting at the intersection before being buried under a pile of rectangular hollow sections.
The bars hit the pavement with a loud clang as an injured Wanna staggered from her two-wheeler. The frantic truck driver was seen apologising to her.
Police arrived at the scene after receiving a report at around 9:30 am.
They found Wanna with a forehead injury. She was given first aid and rushed to the Ban Phai Hospital for further treatment before being released.
The steel bars had also pierced through the bumper end of a pickup truck.
An officer from the Ban Phai station said: 'We will summon the relevant individuals for investigation. We will check if the truck was overloaded with the bars or whether they were fastened safely.'
Phitsamai Wanduea, 26, the driver of the damaged pickup, said: 'I had just reached the junction and stopped to wait for the cars to pass. The girl pulled up next to me. Then, I saw a pickup truck carrying metal bars on its roof turning onto the side road.
'Suddenly, the bars slid off and struck the girl's forehead while she was sitting there. I wasn't hurt, but the front of my vehicle and the tires were damaged. I'm still in shock.'
Thailand suffers from chronic underinvestment in its highways and education, contributing to its poor road safety levels. Only a handful of African countries are worse.
The country has one of the world's worst road safety records. Ministers have set the goal of reducing fatalities from 32.7 deaths per 100,000 people to 12 per 100,000 people by the year 2027.
