A trainer was killed after being dive-bombed by an angry rooster during a cock fighting match in Indonesia.

Nengah Sudana, 50, was at the side of the arena when the roosters were released at the Abian Tubuh Cockfighting Arena in Bali on July 27.

Excited spectators cheered as they waited for the birds to clash - only for one of them to fly toward the unsuspecting trainer instead.

Nengah had no time to react as the avian brutally sank its sharp spurs into his flesh, leaving a six-inch gash across his stomach.

Footage shows a bleeding Iengah limping out of the arena as blood flowed down his legs. He was rushed to a hospital but later died of the injury.

Ketut Sukardi, Denpasar Police Head of Public Relations, said: ‘The trainer did not have time to dodge when one of the fighting cocks attacked. It flew wildly into the audience.

'At the time, the rooster that attacked the victim had just been released to fight. But instead, it attacked aggressively and uncontrollably. The victim died while being treated at the hospital.'

Nengah also suffered wounds to his back and right thigh.

The incident unfolded several weeks after one person was killed at a bloody brawl at another cockfighting arena on the island.

The violence broke out after newly released ex-convict Mangku Luwes went on a rampage while looking for the owner of the illegal cockfighting arena in Songan Village on June 14.

He reportedly started a fight with other locals, and a resident named Komang Alam was killed in the clash.

Cockfighting is generally considered illegal in Indonesia. However, the practice has become part of tradition and several religious rituals in Bali. It is tolerated as long as it does not involve betting or gambling.
