Controversial Thames shipwreck's 81st anniversary off Kent, UK
A controversial shipwreck at the mouth of the Thames off Kent, UK has safely reached its 81st anniversary today (August 20).
WW2 American Liberty ship SS Richard Montgomery grounded and sank off Sheerness on August 20th back in 1944.
The doomed cargo ship went down with 1400 tonnes of explosives still onboard, just 1.5 miles offshore of the Isle of Sheppey.
Monitored 24/7 by authorities, the shipwreck has generally been left to fate, and proven to be difficult for successive governments to resolve due to the costs and dangers of removing it.
Footage filmed from Sheerness seafront shows the ship's three masts visible above the waterline at low tide today.
