An army helicopter crashed killing five people onboard in Pakistan.

The aircraft was conducting a test landing on a helipad when it reportedly encountered technical difficulties during the flight over the Gilgit-Baltistan region today.

The helicopter, sometimes used for relief operations, plunged in Chilas town in the Diamer District.

Footage shows black smoke rising from the wreckage in the Pakistan-administered border area.

Abdul Hameed, police superintendent of Diamer District, said in a statement: 'Reportedly, five casualties occurred due to the helicopter crash.'

Police have reached the crash site to investigate.

Faizullah Faraq, spokesman for the Gilgit-Balitstan government, cited 'technical failure' as the cause of the crash.

He said the exact cause was being determined.

Chief Minister Haji Gulbar Khan added: 'The Army Aviation helicopter crashed in the Hadar area of Diamer due to a technical fault.

'The sacrifice of the martyrs of the helicopter crash is a source of pride for the nation.'

In August, a helicopter delivering aid to flood-stricken Bajaur in northwestern Pakistan crashed in a storm, killing all five people on board.
