Silver City, United States - August 31, 2025 On August 31, 2025, at approximately 3:09 PM, New Mexico State Police Officer Walker Eby responded to a call reporting a vehicle overturned by flooding on Stephens Road near Buckhorn. Upon arrival, Officer Eby found a woman, a six-year-old child, and their dog stranded atop the overturned vehicle, trapped by swift, dangerous currents. He quickly coordinated with the Grant County Sheriff’s Office, the Cliff Volunteer Fire Department, and local residents to plan the rescue. To prevent the vehicle from drifting downstream, a backhoe stabilized it. A ladder was then positioned over the rushing waters to the nearby shore. Officer Eby removed his police gear and crawled across the ladder, reaching the child first. He carried the child on his back back to safety. Returning to the vehicle, Officer Eby provided a safety rope for the woman and secured a harness for the dog. He guided the woman across the ladder and successfully pulled the dog to shore using the safety line. Authorities praised Officer Eby, first responders, and local residents for their bravery and quick action, noting that their teamwork saved lives and exemplified the spirit of community in the face of life-threatening conditions.
