This is the dramatic moment a boy was rescued from floods in northeastern Thailand.

The youngster and his family were evacuating their swamped home when strong currents dragged him away in Nakhon Ratchasima province on Monday.

The child screamed as he lost his footing and was swept away by the surging deluge.

Footage captures the boy's frantic grandparents rushing after him as he was swept toward the flooded street, before managing to grab him from waist-deep waters and lift him onto a pickup truck.

Volunteers then helped push the vehicle out of the area.

Locals said the flooding was 'the worst in a decade' as torrents gushed into their homes, sparking evacuations. One person has been reported missing.

Authorities said hours of continuous heavy rain caused runoff to rush into the Phimai district. The water level reportedly reached up to 12 inches.

Police officers redirected traffic as currents remained strong.

The municipality office deployed machinery to dig up a channel along the median strip, allowing the water to drain.

Officials said the floods were expected to recede if there was no further rain.

Thailand and neighbouring countries in Southeast Asia are in their annual monsoon rainy season which sees soaring temperatures followed by powerful rain storms in the afternoon leading to widespread flash floods.
