AURORA, Ill. — Aurora police released footage Friday showing two investigators rescuing a dog from a burning home on Whitehall Court earlier this week.

Just before 1 p.m. Sept. 11, police and firefighters responded to reports of flames coming from the back of the residence. Investigators Michael Ely and Jacob Leonard forced entry to search the home. Ely found and safely carried out Oakley, a 4-year-old American Staffordshire Terrier.

No one else was inside at the time, and no injuries were reported. A preliminary investigation determined the fire began in the attic, with no foul play suspected.

Homeowners expressed gratitude for Oakley’s rescue, calling him a beloved member of their family. Police Chief Matt Thomas praised the officers, saying their quick response “made a real difference” in ensuring the dog’s safe return.
