This is the terrifying moment a flash flood swept tree branches and muddy torrents through a street in the Philippines.

Dramatic footage shows raging, murky waters rushing down a road as panicked residents took shelter in shops in Maasim, Sarangani province, on October 6.

Officials said the Tinago Creek overflowed after heavy rainfall, with a build-up of debris triggering the sudden deluge.

Authorities reported that at least 100 families from four villages were affected by the freak weather. Around 20 homes were damaged and submerged by the floods. Four individuals were reported injured.

State weather bureau PAGASA said the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) is currently affecting the country, bringing rain to various parts of Mindanao.

The region's low-lying geography, inadequate drainage systems, and rapid urbanisation make it especially vulnerable to flooding. But the country's rudimentary infrastructure means it often struggles to handle the heavy rainfall, resulting in widespread flash floods.

President Ferdinand 'Bongbong' Marcos Jr, himself the son of a dictator who stole some 10 billion USD from the country, has ordered a probe into why swaths of funds allocated for flood control measures have continually disappeared.
