A group of tourists played in 60ft-high white water as waves crashed onto rocks.

Jhon Mark Geronimo and his friends decided to swim at Laswitan Lagoon in Surigao del Sur despite the rough sea conditions as Typhoon Kalmaegi moved closer to the Philippines.

Dramatic footage shows waves crashing against the rock formations, sending a surge shooting into the air before it drops onto the visibly exhilarated youngsters floating in the clear water on November 2.

The powerful waves were believed to have been stirred by the storm, which brought rough seas and strong winds to parts of the country.

The thrill-seeking holidaymakers can be heard screaming and laughing each time the waves crash against the boulders.

Jhon said: 'We had just visited the cemetery and decided to cool down because it was hot at the time. The sea was rough, but we still continued to swim at the beach.'

Kalmaegi, locally known as Tino, has killed at least 188 people and displaced hundreds of thousands across the country. Another 135 people remain missing.

State weather bureau PAGASA said the storm dumped more than a month's worth of rain in just 24 hours in Southern Leyte and Cebu.

The storm later made landfall in central Vietnam late on Thursday, November 6, uprooting trees, damaging homes, and causing widespread power outages before weakening as it moved inland.

Climate experts said typhoons are becoming stronger due to human-induced climate change. Warmer ocean temperatures allow storms to intensify rapidly, while a hotter atmosphere holds more moisture, leading to heavier rainfall.
