Kind shopkeeper pretends to scan elderly woman's food for four years to help her
A kind shopkeeper pretended to scan the groceries of a struggling elderly woman for four years to help her get by without embarrassing her.
Store owner Chen Hui, 37, has quietly been paying for part of the pensioner's food without her ever noticing. He said he wanted her dignity to remain without her feeling embarrassed.
Touching CCTV footage taken between 2021 and 2025 shows Chen pointing the scanner at a pack of bread and a can of soda that the woman is holding.
However, the device would only register part of her shopping. With funds deducted digitally, the pensioner had never noticed the difference.
Chen shared the story online this month, hoping that others would follow suit to help vulnerable members of society.
He said: 'A little support within our ability can make society better. My heart goes out to the elderly who have been struggling, and as someone's grandson, I did not hesitate to lend a hand.'
