IDAHO SPRINGS, Colo. — A quick response by transportation workers prevented a potential tragedy along Interstate 70 after a dog ran toward traffic near Idaho Springs, according to the Idaho Springs Police Department.

The incident occurred Dec. 10 near I-70 at mile marker 240 after high winds damaged a backyard fence, allowing the dog to escape and head toward the interstate. The animal appeared exhausted but continued moving toward the roadway.

A crew from the Colorado Department of Transportation acted quickly, blocking a westbound lane to protect the dog and approaching motorists. Using coordinated teamwork, the crew was able to safely capture the dog before it reached active traffic lanes.

No injuries were reported, and the dog was reunited with its grateful owner. Officials praised the crew’s quick thinking, noting the actions helped avoid a serious incident on the busy mountain highway.
