INDIANAPOLIS — An Indianapolis police officer used calm conversation and patience to gain a man’s trust and prevent a potential tragedy, according to video released by the Indianapolis Police Department.

In the video, the officer approaches a man later identified as Josh, who was sitting in a dangerous position and showing signs of mental distress. Rather than escalating the situation, the officer spoke calmly, reassured Josh that he was not in trouble, and emphasized that police were there to help, not arrest him.

The officer engaged Josh in casual conversation, asking about music and shared interests, while repeatedly assuring him that no one would tackle or harm him. Over several minutes, the officer encouraged Josh to move to a safer spot and continue talking.

Gradually, Josh agreed to step away from danger and sit with the officer. The officer thanked him for trusting him and acknowledged the courage it took to accept help, ultimately guiding him toward assistance.

Police said the encounter highlights how communication, empathy and trust-building can play a critical role during mental health crises.

If you or someone you know is struggling, help is available. In the United States, the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline offers free, confidential support by call or text, 24 hours a day.
