"This initiative was launched not to say that we have succeeded or partially succeeded, but to make up for the educational loss we face in the Gaza Strip. This is not just an educational school; it is a school that nurtures resilience and steadfastness. It helps restore a sense of normal life for the people and for children. These children are living under very difficult conditions, and the school's conditions are even harder, as we are located close to the yellow line."

The Al-Shamal Educational School in Beit Lahiya’s Jabalia Refugee remains the only functioning educational facility near the demarcation line in the northern Gaza Strip. School administrators have refused to evacuate, prioritizing continuity of education for Palestinian children in the war-affected area.

Among the students is 10-year-old Yameen Zinati, who was pulled alive from rubble after his home was destroyed in Israeli attacks. Now living in a tent with his mother, he walks to school daily through debris and the sound of explosions.

Yameen said. "I am very scared on the way to school because of shelling, gunfire and attacks, but I still need to learn and study a lot."

His mother, Mona Al-Zinati, said she enrolled him on her first day at the location. "I can't afford for him to lose another year — he needs to study in person and attend school regularly," she said, noting her son had already lost approximately two years of education.

School principal Yara Abu Ghloua said the center serves more than 400 students. "From the standpoint of the school and our belief as a local community, our goal is to educate our children. Ignorance leads us to destruction and ruin, and our duty is knowledge and education," she said.

Abu Ghloua described challenging conditions, with students sitting on the ground in cold weather inside basic tents. "You can hear the sound of gunfire and tanks. This has become part of our daily life," she said, adding that teachers remain on alert and face difficult situations when heavy shelling occurs.

Palestinians say Israeli forces continue attacks across Gaza in violation of a ceasefire agreement that took effect Oct. 10 with Hamas. The agreement defined a Yellow Line along Gaza's eastern strip up to the Israeli border, but Israel has expanded its control beyond this demarcation under the pretext of creating a buffer zone, extending to approximately 60% of the territory, according to Palestinian sources.

Since hostilities began Oct. 8, 2023, more than 71,000 people have been killed and over 171,000 wounded, with about 90% of civilian infrastructure destroyed, according to Palestinian figures.

Israeli attacks have damaged 95% of schools in Gaza, with 668 school buildings directly targeted — nearly 80% of all schools, Palestinian authorities report.
