Children at an Indian village in the Himalayas risk their lives to go to school by taking a trolley slung 100 feet over a raging river.

Twice a day, children of Danijala village in Haldwani, Uttarkhand, India, use the trolley to go to the school and return home.

Residents say the road to school gets submerged whenever the river Gaula overflows due to heavy rain or melting snow from the Himalayas.

As the villagers get cut off completely from the outside world the only option is to either ride the risky trolley or stay at home.

Parents say besides the immense risk the trolley poses, using it is also a waste of time. “It takes hours to send all the children across the river in small batches,” says Reshma Sharma, mother of a seven-year-old girl.

Villagers say they have been demanding a bridge across the river for years but the government has not responded.
