A group of villagers rescued a fisherman who became caught in a raging river in Indonesia.

Footage captured on September 8 near Padang city, West Sumatra, shows the 17-year-old named by locals as Ridwan trapped on a rock in the middle of a fast-flowing river.

The teenagers were fishing on the banks when Ridwan decided to move further into the water.

But heavy rain upstream caused the river to swell and Ridwan became trapped, according to the filmer, Rahmad Duha.

Ridwan's friends alerted locals to their friend's danger, leading the residents to mount a daring rescue attempt.

The villagers threw a rope towards the teenager and tried to reel him to the riverbank – but the effort nearly ends in tragedy as Ridwan loses his grip on the rope.

Fortunately, he grasps the rope and is pulled to land as villagers applaud.
