The excitement of an African safari lies in the fact that you never know what you might find around the next corner while driving through the bush. At any time the bush can reveal many pleasant or sometimes scary encounters. The video shows one of those unexpected scary encounters with a large elephant bull. While driving down a road in the Kruger Park we suddenly came across a big elephant bull who was not happy with our presence on the road on which he was walking. The side of his head was stained with secretions from his temporal glands and a pungent urine smell filled the air.These were signs that this bull was in a state of elevated testosterone levels called musth. This is when older male elephants are in a reproductive state and they become extremely irritable and aggressive. With this in mind, we stopped a good distance away from the elephant without switching off the vehicle. As predicted, this elephant did not like our presence and started walking straight towards the vehicle in an intimidating manner while throwing dust around to show off his dominance. This was a scary sight and I had to keep driving backwards the whole time. The elephant kept coming towards us while throwing dust around with his trunk. I ended up driving in reverse for over fifty meters before the grumpy bull eventually decided to move off the road. It was very clear that the elephant was the boss of the road on this day,which we respected.When the largest land mammal on earth with elevated aggression levels starts coming towards you, its best you show respect and make way.
