A snake rescuer has caused an uproar among wildlife experts with his brutal treatment of a python.

A farmer in Kasargod district of South India called a snake rescuer Aramanganathu Muhammed after he found a python in his chicken coop.

By the time Muhammed arrived, the snake had killed and eaten two birds.

Instead of capturing and releasing the python in a forest, Muhammed went on to force it to regurgitate what it had eaten.

A video of the incident shows Muhammed even stamping on the snake to make it vomit.

The incident deeply upset wildlife activists, who complained to the forest department alleging that Muhammed had tortured the python and violated Indian wildlife laws.

Not happy with the response of the forest department, a Kerala-based NGO Animal Legal Force approached the High Court on January 18 to ensure officials take serious note of the alleged crime.

Noted snake expert Subhendu Mallik observed that forcing the devoured chicken out of the python was unwarranted.

“The snake's vertebrae system is delicate and he is seen putting too much pressure on it with his leg. He could have easily damaged its vital internal organs,” said Mallik.

“The government should ensure all rescuers are trained and certified before they are allowed to work,” added Mallik.
