Heart-rending footage shows mum desperately looking for dead baby in South India
This is the heart-warming moment a teary-eyed elephant desperately searching for its baby unable to come to terms with the fact that baby died falling off a slope while drinking water from a reservoir in South India.
A herd of elephant had come to Bhavani Sagar Dam reservoir area to have a drink of water in Erode district of Tamil Nadu on January 27. While climbing up the steep slope of the baby lost balance and fell to its death. The one-and-a-half-year-old suffered a serious head injury in the fall and died on the spot.
According to the forest officials, the mother tried to pull the lifeless body of the baby out, but she failed. After trying for hours, the elephant left for the jungle apparently to get some help. This gave forest officials the window to remove the body without being chased or challenged by the mum who was unable to come to terms with her loss.
The body of the baby elephant was eventually buried. But for the past few days, the mother elephant is roaming around around the area searching for her baby. She comes out of the jungle to the place where accident happened, spends a few hours carrying out of a frantic search for the baby. Then exhausted, frustrated and heartbroken, the mother returns to the forest unaware of the fact that she would never be able to mind her baby again.
