Disaster response teams rescue woman and children trapped by floods in east India
Several teams of National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) have rescued people stranded in the rising water levels in northeastern India’s Assam after heavy rainfall lashed the entire state.
The incident took place at Hawra Ghat of Goalpara district on July 20.
The footage shows several rescue officials on a boat, wearing life jackets and rescuing people swamped in the waterlogged area.
Reports suggest at least 56 people, including 12 women and 13 children, have been rescued.
The rescued people have been safely moved to higher areas.
Dhemaji in Upper Assam and Barpeta in Lower Assam are the worst-hit because the water ranges in the Brahmaputra and its tributaries rose due to incessant rainfall for one week.
Several embankments have been breached, and roads and bridges have been broken on account of rising floodwaters, according to local reports.
Besides, teams are also assisting district administration in the distribution of masks, screening inundated areas while maintaining proper social distancing due to the COVID-19 emergency.
