Bus passengers were shocked when they saw the driver using a smartphone while travelling on a busy road.

Somnuek Waiyasab, 57, was driving from Chai Nat, central Thailand, when he was allegedly seen scrolling through Facebook on his phone, using his free hand to steer.

A concerned passenger recorded the bus driver as they arrived in Bangkok on Wednesday afternoon (September 30).

Bosses were handed footage of the incident and summoned him to a meeting at the head office.

Somnuek said he was just calling his relatives on Line application. He said that he has been driving for more than 20 years.

He said: "One of my family members was at the hospital, so I wanted to check them if they were doing fine. I later checked Facebook feed after that for a little while."

Head officer Hatairat Khongchana from Suphanburi Department of Land Transport warned the driver that using the phone could cause an accident.

She said: "The driver confessed that he used a phone while driving. I cannot deny that it was illegal."

The driver was fined 2,000 Baht (around 50 GBP) and ordered to take part in a driving training course.
