Roads turned to rivers after flooding bursts through streets in Cambodia
Severe floods continued across Cambodia today (October 12) leaving at least 11 people dead since the start of the month.
Homes were submerged in the capital Phnom Penh and Battambang and Pursat provinces, forcing residents to travel between places using boats.
Footage shows muddy torrents gushing through streets in Pursat province as soldiers battled to secure the area and evacuate stricken locals.
In some areas where the flood water only reached ankle-deep, motorists and residents were seen wading through floods while heavy rain pounded them.
Officials said that at least 10 people have drowned since the start of the month when heavy rain began. Another person had been struck by lightning while caught in the floods.
National Committee for Disaster Management spokesman Khun Sokha said the seasonal rains were made worse by a tropical storm.
The Department of Public Works and Transportation said that Battambang and Pursat in the country's northwest were two worst-hit provinces. They banned trucks from travelling in the region.
Chea Sambath, Governor of Rukha Kiri district in Battambang province, said that more than 1,500 families and 3,000 hectares of rice fields had been affected.
Prime Minister Hun Sen mobilised local authorities and rescue teams to aid those affected.
Cambodia and neighbouring Thailand have both suffered severe flooding in recent days as the region reaches the peak of its annual rainy season.
