Elephants stroll their way onto roads in Sri Lanka
A herd of elephants was seen strolling on the road in Sri Lanka's Habarana city on November 9.
The incident took place at Trincomalee road near Kaudulla and Minneriya National Park.
Visuals of the scenic setting feature several elephants touring the road and the nearby field. The tuskers appear from the woods in a herd and stray across the empty road. A tiny calf can also be seen trotting down to join the herd.
Meanwhile, some giant creatures can be seen munching on the field crops.
According to locals, this is a common scenario in the region and these elephants come to the roads during night in order to hunt for food.
Sri Lanka holds an important position with regard to Asian elephant conservation. There are an estimated 7,500 wild elephants in the country.
The majority of Sri Lanka’s elephants live outside protected areas where they jostle for space with humans in landscapes consisting of forests and scrubland intermixed with farmland and villages and towns.
Since 1986, these elephants have been listed as endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) as the population has declined by at least 50% over the last three generations.
The species is primarily threatened by habitat loss, degradation and fragmentation.
