Gold worth $1,31,166.46 seized by air customs in southern India

Gold worth Rs 97.7 lakhs (1,31,166.46 USD) was seized by the air customs department of southern India's Chennai International Airport on November 15. Total five cases of smuggling were detected. All the suspects were intercepted at the Anna International Terminal.

A video featuring the smuggled items showcases 12 gold paste bundles weighing 1.93 kg (4.255 lbs) and one packet of gold paste weighing 280 grams.

On extraction, the 12 gold paste bundles valued 1.61 kg (3.539 lbs) gold of 24K purity at Rs. 84.94 lakhs (1,14,027.96 USD) and one packet of gold paste yielded 243 grams of 24K purity valued at Rs. 12.8 lakhs (17,183.40 USD).

Four passengers, Mohamathu Tharig, Syed Mohamed Paris, Sikkandar Masthan and Rahuman Khan were intercepted for smuggling the 12 gold paste bundles. They flew in from Dubai on flight number EK-544. The other packet of gold paste was extracted from Dhasthageer, who flew in from flight number FZ-8517 and was arrested on the night of November 15.

A total of 1.85 kgs (4.079 lbs) gold valued at Rs 97.7 lakhs (1,31,166.46 USD) was seized by the airport authorities under the Customs Act of 1962.
