The popular Muizenberg Beach on Cape Town's False Bay coastline was most mostly deserted this morning as South Africa's alert level 3 Covid 19 lockdown regulations took effect. The country was moved from alert level 1 to alert level 3 as infections spikes and a second wave of infections overwhelmed the country's already strained healthcare services.

As part of the measures announced by President Cyril Ramaphosa on Monday 28 December, all public beaches, pools, lakes, rivers and dams have been closed to the public and all public outdoor and indoor gatherings are restricted.

A few people walked along the beachfront walkway in Muizenberg as one two people in canoes were seen in the water. The new regulations will be in force until 15 January 2020. The new regulations also include a curfew from 9pm to 6am.
