Flood victims rescued by helicopter in Malaysia
Rescue teams evacuated 10 flood victims by helicopter in Malaysia.
The locals were trapped for several hours in a heavily-flooded settlement after heavy rain in Bentong City in the state of Pahang on Sunday December 19.
Dramatic footage shows the rescuers carrying the flood victims, who were stuck on the roofs of their homes, up to the chopper while hanging from a rope. All of the stranded residents were successfully airlifted to safety.
The flooding is said to be one of the worst that Malaysia has experienced in recent years, with a month's worth of rain falling within days, Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob said.
Some 21,000 people across Malaysia have been evacuated to relief centres.
Director of Malaysia Fire and Rescue Operations, Datuk Nor Hisham Mohammad, said as many as 40 members and officers were deployed to carry out rescue operations for flood victims in Pahang State and the capital Selangor using helicopters.
He said: 'So far we have focused on these two areas because of the strong river current that left some of the victims trapped. However, they were reported to have survived because they were in a high area.'
He added that they received 1,800 emergency calls nationwide within 24 hours, 1,600 of which had reportedly come from the Selangor area.
Hisham said: 'Our main challenge is to respond quickly, and the main obstacle is how to get into the affected area with the roads closed, as well as having cars stuck on the road.'
The Malaysia Meteorological Department took down heavy rain warnings on Sunday evening.
