A turtle found trapped in a so-called 'ghost net' was saved by a kindly fisherman in South India, before being returned to the sea on 20 April.

The fisherman saw the Oliver Ridley turtle struck in a one-and-a-half tonne ghost net -- a net that has been lost or discarded in the ocean -- and rescued it, taking it to a local turtle activist in Neelankarai, Chennai, Tamil Nadu.

The activist checked the health of the turtle and said it had been badly injured for two years at least. One of its front limbs was completely lost.

The turtle was treated and as its health condition improved it was taken out to sea and set free by local fishermen.

The turtle swam happily into the sea, bidding goodbye to its human friends.
