A speeding car lost control and fell into a roadside well without a bordering wall in Udma town in Kasargod district in the state of Kerala, India on May 3 evening. The well was 15 metres deep and located near the Hydros Juma Masjid.
The accident occurred at about 5 PM and local residents and the fire brigade personnel rescued the four persons -- Abdul Nazar (48), who was behind the wheels, and his children Midhilaj (13), Ajmal (9) and Vahid (6) -- stranded in the well. Ramachandran, Ayyappan and Shameer Kallingal entered the well using a rope and rescued the children from the car lying inside the well. Soon, fire force officials arrived and saved Abdul Nazar also. The car was found submerged in the well water. The victims were rushed to a hospital where doctors examined them and found them without any life threatening injuries.
The two-wheeler driver, Fazila (29), and her relatives Asmila (14) and Ansil (9) were also rushed to Mansoor Hospital where they were examined and were said to be out of danger. Local residents said it was irresponsible on part of mosque officials to leave the well without any barricade on the side of a busy road.
