Man tries to smuggle gold worth $13,906 concealed in shirt buttons and make-up kit, held at airport in southern India

A man was held by the Air Intelligence Unit (AIU) of the customs department after he tried to smuggle gold by hiding them in buttons of a shirt and a make-up kit in southern India's Telangana.

The incident happened at the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport in the capital city of Hyderabad on June 28.

Visuals showed one of the custom department officials cutting out the buttons from the seized kurta. He tried to cut open a button with a scissor after separating it from the garment but found it difficult to do so. Later, he removed all the buttons from the kurta.

He also cut open a make-up kit. According to a report, 220 gms of gold worth Rs 11 lakh (USD 13,906.36) was seized from his baggage.

The passenger, who was trying to smuggle gold from Dubai, was intercepted on flight AI-952 after receiving a tip-off. A case under the Customs Act was also registered. Further investigation is ongoing to find out the others involved.
