Indonesian govt blocks Paypal and Yahoo, but it can still be accessed by changing the connection to a non-government provider
Internet users in Indonesia cannot access Paypal and Yahoo today, Saturday (30 July). This makes merchants and payees on Paypal into a panic.
Footage filmed in Bukittinggi, West Sumatra province, shows a journalist trying to access a blocked website.
Wahyu Lelo, that journalist, initially panicked when he heard the decision of his country's government because he also received payments on Paypal.
Lelo failed to access the two websites when using the Telkomsel provider, which is a state-owned enterprises ISP. But then managed to open Paypal and Yahoo when using the Indosat internet network (non state-owned enterprises).
“When I got the news that paypal was blocked, I tried to access it using my phone but failed. The Paypal application and its website cannot be accessed. I went to the office, then connected my phone to the wifi. It turns out that I can access Paypal and Yahoo,” Lelo said happily.
According to Lelo, although currently he can access Paypal through non-state owned enterprises providers, he is worried that in the future the government will block access from all providers.
Lelo hopes the government overturns the decision or those who are blocked immediately follow and obey the rules in Indonesia as it will affect online merchants, journalists and those who transact using Paypal.
The Jakarta Post reported that the Indonesia Communications and Information Ministry has blocked access to eight popular electronic services providers (ESPs) for failing to comply with licensing policy.
Semuel Abrijani Pangerapan, the ministry’s informatics applications director general confirmed on Saturday that search engine Yahoo, video game digital distribution service Steam and online payment service PayPal were among eight ESPs that have been blocked.
The other ESPs are online game platforms Dota, Counter-Strike, Epic Games and Origin.com, and data platform Xandr.com.
While massively popular platforms such as Zoom, Twitter, Netflix, Spotify, Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, Google and YouTube have registered under the controversial licensing regime.
