Nankeen (or Australian) Kestrels (Falco cenchroides) are Australia’s commonest small hawk. They eat a variety of prey including large insects, small reptiles, small birds and small rodents, mostly mice. This female Nankeen Kestrel caught a Blind Snake (Anilios grypus) and landed with the wriggling reptile on top of a thorny shrub to consume it. The harmless Blind Snake wrapped itself around the Kestrel’s leg and a twig, but to no avail as the bird pulled it to pieces the swallowed its remains whole.
