A disastrous storm wreaked havoc in Vermont, USA, leaving the northeastern state swamped in muddy floods.

Drone footage shows the brown water inundating the capital Montpelier on July 11 as the North Branch river and Winooski rivers burst their banks and spilled over into communities.

The storm had dumped around two months worth of rain over two days in Vermont, with some communities seeing seven to nine inches of water, local media reported.

Vermont Governor Phil Scott said the flood waters were 'historic', wreaking devastation comparable to Tropical Storm Irene that killed six in the state back in 2011.

He said: 'Make no mistake, the flooding we have seen is historic and catastrophic, surpassing levels seen during Tropical Storm Irene.

'I know thousands of Vermonters have lost homes, businesses and more. The devastation is far-reaching.'

As of Tuesday, July 11, state officials said the water has begun receding as the swollen Winooski River in the state capital Montpelier stabilised and is now 'below flood stage.'

There have been no injuries or deaths reported in the state as of Tuesday, authorities said.
