The Marapi volcano on the island of Sumatra, Indonesia, erupted again on Friday (22 December 2023).

A large eruption sent a column of ash up to 500 metres into the sky.

The 85-second eruption was followed by continuous plumes of volcanic smoke from the crater at the top of Mount Marapi until nightfall.

Thick smoke blown by the wind caused thin to thick ash rain in Padang Panjang and Tanah Datar.

The ash rain also led to the closure of all flights to and from Minangkabau International Airport (BIM) in Padang Pariaman Regency due to the ash rain.

The Centre for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) reminds people in the affected areas to wear masks to avoid respiratory infections due to exposure to volcanic ash.

Mount Marapi, 2,981 metres above sea level, is on alert, or level II above normal activity, with a danger zone of three kilometres around the crater at the top of the mountain.
