A Spanish-Brazilian female tourist was robbed and gangraped by seven men in the east Indian state of Jharkhand on Friday night (March 1st), prompting a manhunt for the suspects.

The crime took place at Kurumahat, Dumka district, around 400 km from state capital Ranchi.

Local police have since arrested three in connection with the case, and claim to have identified all the suspects.

The female tourist, who is a dual citizen of Brazil and Spain, travelled with her partner to Dumka from Bangladesh on two motorcycles en route to Bihar and then Nepal, and were robbed about ten thousand rupees and beaten by the attackers.

She stated on social media, "They have beaten us and robbed us although not many things because what they wanted was to rape me,"

The pair were found by local police after the assault wandering along the road around 1:30am Saturday night and taken to hospital for their injuries, where they were able to explain the crime.

A Spanish woman was assaulted and gangraped and looted allegedly by seven men in Jharkhand’s Dumka district Friday night. The crime took place at Kurumahat under Hansdiha police station area, around 400 km from state capital Ranchi.

Dumka Superintendent of Police Pitambar Singh Kherwar tells that the police have “identified all of the accused” and “three have been arrested” in connection with the case. Kherwar later told the media that an SIT has been constituted under the leadership of the sub-divisional police officer (SDPO), Jarmundih, to probe the incident.

Help is also being sought from the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL), he said, adding that all of the accused are residents of nearby villages and raids are being carried out to nab the remaining four

"Something has happened to us that we would not wish on anyone. Seven men have raped me."

The woman and her partner, who had reached Dumka from Bangladesh on two motorcycles and was en route to Bihar and then Nepal, were also robbed about ten thousand rupees and beaten up

Dumka Superintendent of Police Pitambar Singh Kherwar said Hansdiha police patrolling team found two people on the side of the road around 11 pm on Friday.

"The patrolling team sensed that something had happened to them. Since they were speaking in Spanish, the police could not understand what they were saying. However, the policemen brought them to a local hospital assuming they needed some treatment," he said.
The Spanish couple told doctors about the incident of sexual assault, he said.
"We were informed about the incident around 1.30 am on Saturday. The investigation started as soon as we received the information. We spoke to the victim. Thereafter, we detained some people and during interrogation, they admitted their involvement. The accused also took some other names.
