Fake Labubu Art toys worth thousands of dollars were seized by police in Thailand.

Labubu is part of The Monsters universe created by Hong Kong artist Kasing Lung in 2015. The character, which looks like a rabbit with a mischievous grin showing its jagged teeth, is the most popular in the series.

Central Investigation Bureau officers confiscated more than 100 counterfeit toys manufactured in China being sold in 11 shops at a mall in Nonthaburi province on May 16.

Police Major General Wittaya Sriprasert, commissioner of the Consumer Protection Police Division, said police coordinated with the Thai Industrial Standards Institute to conduct the raid following reports of fake sales, knock-off products, and price gouging.

"We received information of illegal sales of products that lack Thai Industrial Standard certification. The products may be harmful to consumers and directly affect the Thai economy," the commissioner said.

"In order to help prevent such problems, Division 3 of the Crime Suppression Division has mobilised all units to investigate the mall to search the sales locations," he added.

Police said the shop owners may be charged with 'manufacturing or importing industrial products without the required standard certification for sale within the kingdom' which carries a punishment of up to two years in jail, a fine of up to two million THB (44,000 GBP), or both.

They may also be charged with 'selling or possessing for sale industrial products without the appropriate authorisation', with a penalty of up to six months imprisonment, a fine up to 500,000 THB (11,000 GBP), or both.

Police said Labubu toys, which recently saw a spike in popularity in Thailand, must pass Thai Industrial Standards before being sold.

Buyers were urged to thoroughly check shops before purchasing items to prevent being scammed with counterfeit products.
