A drunk British man who was about to jump from an abandoned building in Pattaya was talked down by police in Thailand.

Simon Mark Saunders, 60, from Abernant, raised concerns from locals when he was spotted wandering along the second floor of an unfinished Waterfront Suites and Residences condominium building in Pattaya, on May 23 at 1:30 am.

He was reportedly walking on metal sheets which made noise and alerted the security guard roving the area who shone a flashlight on him.

The Briton was asked to climb down due to safety reasons but he refused, so the guards had to call authorities for help.

Footage shows Simon standing on the edge of a 30ft-high floor . He seemed confused as more police gathered at the front of the property until he agreed to climb down.

Security guard Watcharaphon Khanti, 43, said: ‘I heard footsteps on the zinc sheets in the building. I shone my flashlight and saw a foreigner walking on the second floor.

‘I asked him why he was up there and I was shocked when he told he wanted to commit suicide.'

Guard Watcharaphon added he tried to stop him and the British man changed his mind but he reportedly did not know how to climb down.

When authorities arrived, they guided him how he could get out of the building and descend safely.

A spokesman from the Pattaya City Police Station said: ‘We spent more than 30 minutes negotiating with him before he agreed to climb down.'

The Brit was unharmed and helped return to his accomodation after the incident.

The Waterfront Suites and Residences condominium project started construction in 2013, featuring a 53-story condominium building and a 20-story hotel with 315 rooms.

However, construction was stopped on July 16, 2014, after it was challenged over its design and the land it was built on.  The incomplete building has already been ordered demolished.

On May 13, the Rayong Criminal Court for Corruption and Misconduct Cases acquitted former Pattaya Mayor Ittipol Khunpluem and nine associates of granting an illegal construction permit for this project.

The acquittal was issued because his charge's 15-year statute of limitations had expired.
