Rescuers from the Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations (MChS) rescued 170 fishermen when an ice floe broke in Russia.

The ice floe reportedly broke away, trapping 200 anglers in the Okhotsk Sea, Sakhalin Oblast, on February 28.

Eleven specialists and six vehicles were deployed, along with Hivus hovercrafts and a Mi-8 helicopter, retrieving 66 individuals at first before airlifting and boarding the rest of the crew to safety.

Footage shows officers boarding a group of fishermen onto the aircraft.

Local media reported that all 374 individuals were rescued. No one was reportedly hurt in the incident.

On February 12, rescuers from the Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations (MChS) evacuated 109 anglers stranded on a drifting ice floe in the same area.

In a separate incident earlier this year, more than 80 fishermen were rescued when an ice floe detached from the shore near Starodubskoye village.

Local media also reported that in 2020, over 500 ice fishermen had to be rescued from a similar incident near Mordvinov Bay.
