Young boy uses ATM emergency button to seek help after losing parents in market
On February 14, in Fushun, Liaoning, a young boy got separated from his parents while browsing a market. Faced with an unfamiliar environment and a crowd of strangers, he remained calm and looked for a way to seek help. He noticed a roadside bank ATM and, relying on memory or instinct, believed it to be a safe place where he could ask for assistance.
The boy entered the ATM’s secure enclosure and crouched down. The ATM was equipped with a fall-detection system, which automatically triggered an alarm when it detected prolonged inactivity or an unusual posture inside.
Upon hearing the alarm, the boy stood up and looked around, eventually spotting the emergency call button on the ATM.
Without hesitation, he pressed the emergency call button and connected with the bank’s monitoring center. He calmly explained his situation to the staff, detailing how he had lost his parents and providing his basic information.
After receiving the alarm, bank staff quickly arrived at the scene, brought the boy into the bank lobby, and reassured him.
At the same time, the bank notified the police. Using the names and home address provided by the boy, officers were finally able to contact his mother.
Around 20 minutes later, the boy’s mother arrived at the bank and safely took him home.
It was learned that while the boy could recall his parents' names and home address, he did not know their phone numbers. Police emphasized that a phone number is a crucial piece of information in cases of missing children, as it can significantly speed up the reunification process. Parents are advised to teach their children to memorize their phone numbers.
Authorities also reminded the public that in case of getting lost, children can use their school as the first emergency reporting location. All primary and secondary school security offices are equipped with a one-touch alarm system, directly linked to the 110 emergency response platform, which can immediately identify the school’s location and details.
Additionally, children can also seek help from 24-hour security-staffed businesses, large hospitals, or shopping malls, where employees can assist in contacting authorities.
