Suspect Offers Vodka Spritz Mid-Chase, Asks If Deputies Had Fun
In a case that might go down in law enforcement legend, the Highlands County Sheriff's Office encountered a pursuit unlike any other on April 19. It all began at the Spring Lake Market, where 39-year-old Richard Christopher Smith of Miami reportedly stole several alcoholic beverages and other items before taking a joyride in a black minivan—doing loops around the store parking lot.
When deputies arrived on scene, Smith sped off, triggering a pursuit that wound its way across several miles and ended near Sebring Airport. But it wasn’t just the wild ride that raised eyebrows. In the middle of the chase, Smith nonchalantly held a can of Ketel One vodka spritz out his window and offered it to a deputy. “I was just going to give you a drink, that’s it,” he called out, as if it were all one big misunderstanding.
After attempting to ram patrol vehicles and having all four tires shredded by spike strips, Smith exited his vehicle, lit a cigarette, and tried to walk away—only to be tased and arrested. His post-arrest commentary? “You guys had fun, though, right?” Smith now faces multiple charges including DUI, aggravated assault on law enforcement, and resisting arrest. His bond is set at $120,000.
