WHITE LAKE TOWNSHIP, Mich. — A late-night crash call turned into an unexpected act of compassion on May 6, when officers from the White Lake Township Police Department saved a newborn fawn following a fatal car vs. deer collision.

Officer Wright arrived at the scene near Highland Road and Meijer around 10:30 p.m. and discovered that the doe involved in the crash was pregnant and about to give birth. While the mother did not survive, Wright was able to carefully remove the fawn, warm it, and get it breathing.

He brought the fawn back to the police station, where Officer Snow provided continued care — making a bed and bottle-feeding the young deer. The midnight shift affectionately named him “Little Baby Meijer” after the place he was born.

A wildlife rehabilitation center was contacted and is taking over care of the fawn until it can be released back into the wild.

“Sometimes in this job you see and do things you have never done before,” the department wrote on Facebook. “We can now mark deer birthing and deer neonatal care off the list. Best of luck with your life, Baby Meijer!”
