SILVER SPRING, Md. — A 1.5-year-old black bear spotted in a suburban tree on Memorial Day was safely removed and relocated by the Maryland Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Wildlife and Heritage Service.

The young male bear had been tracked for weeks as it traveled from Baltimore County through Howard County. On Monday, the animal made its way into a densely populated area in Langley Park, drawing a large crowd after climbing a tree.

DNR staff sedated the bear using a tranquilizer dart, monitored its descent, and then secured it for tagging and relocation. The bear was also fitted with a collar as part of a University of Maryland population study.

Officials say the bear was likely dispersing—searching for new territory after leaving its birthplace. He now resides in a more suitable green space, far from the bustle of city life.
