RAMONA, Calif. — Two young black bear cubs are recovering at the San Diego Humane Society’s Ramona Wildlife Center after being rescued in Calaveras County and transported to the facility on July 24, 2025. A third sibling, a female, was humanely euthanized due to serious health issues.

The orphaned cubs — approximately 6 to 7 months old — had been seen wandering alone for days before the California Department of Fish and Wildlife intervened. The bears underwent medical evaluations July 31, revealing that the female had a malformed shoulder and elbow, along with a bullet lodged in her paw.

“This is never a decision we take lightly,” said Dr. Alexis Wohl, Wildlife Veterinary Manager. “But in cases where an animal’s quality of life would be severely compromised, humane euthanasia is sometimes the most compassionate option.”

The two surviving male cubs are now in an outdoor enclosure designed to replicate their natural habitat and will continue their rehabilitation under the care of Project Wildlife. The Ramona Wildlife Center is the only facility in California currently able to accept black bear cubs for rehabilitation, as others remain at capacity.
