MISQUAMICUT, R.I. — Firefighters from multiple agencies rescued a dog that fell through thin ice at Little Masachaug Pond on Tuesday morning, marking a successful first call of 2026 for local responders.

Just before 9 a.m., the Misquamicut Fire Department, Westerly Ambulance Corps and Westerly Police Department were dispatched to the pond off Atlantic Avenue for a reported water rescue. A golden retriever named Phoenix had wandered onto the pond during a morning walk and broke through a thin layer of ice near the center.

Misquamicut Deputy Chief Howard requested assistance from the Watch Hill Fire Department for specialized ice rescue equipment. Volunteers arrived within minutes and located Phoenix struggling in the frigid water while the dog’s owner remained safely on shore.

Firefighters from both departments donned ice rescue suits and entered the pond, while additional personnel staged equipment, including an inflatable rescue boat. The responders successfully reached Phoenix and brought the dog and rescuers safely back to shore.

Firefighters involved in the rescue were evaluated by emergency medical personnel for possible hypothermia but did not require treatment. All units cleared the scene shortly afterward.

Officials emphasized that no ice is ever considered safe and urged the public to avoid frozen bodies of water. Fire department leadership from both agencies praised the quick response, coordination and teamwork that led to the successful rescue.
