A landslide struck a fairground and killed one worker in the Philippines.

Loosened earth rolled down a hillside and buried alive Russel Pasawilan, 25, while he was sleeping in a hut in South Cotabato, on May 13.

Footage shows rescue teams extracting Russel's body after removing soil from the site using a crane.

Women screamed as personnel dragged out the unconscious man from the rubble. He was rushed to the hospital but died of serious head injuries.

A spokesman for the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office said: 'The victim was hit on the head by wood and rocks before he was buried alive. He was rushed to the hospital but was declared dead on arrival. The other fairground workers survived.'

Authorities said the landslide may have been caused by continuous heavy rain in the area.

The Philippines and neighbouring countries in Southeast Asia are in their annual monsoon rainy season which sees soaring temperatures followed by powerful rain storms in the afternoon leading to widespread flash floods.
