PRAIRIE CITY, Iowa — The rolling grasslands of Neal Smith National Wildlife Refuge are alive with sound as bison mating season hits full stride.

Bison bulls can be heard making deep, guttural bellows that echo across the refuge as they compete for mates. These vocalizations, used to assert dominance and attract females, are part of the complex social behavior of North America's largest land mammal.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service shared a video captured by Nancy Corona highlighting the powerful sounds of the bison bulls during this dramatic season on the prairie. Visitors to the refuge may hear the bison bellows in person through late summer as the competition continues.
