Two people were killed and a girl was left missing as a landslide struck northern Thailand today during heavy rain from Typhoon Kajiki.

The residents were buried as wet earth and debris cascaded down the hillside near Pang Ung village in Chiang Mai province, in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

Footage shows disaster response crews clearing toppled trees and electric posts that were hampering rescue operations.

Authorities said two locals were found dead and a 12-year-old schoolgirl was missing.

Dusit Phongsapipat, head of the Chiang Mai Provincial Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Office, said: 'At approximately 2:50 am on August 27, a landslide occurred in Ban Pang Ung.

'The landslide severely damaged at least seven homes. More than 10 people were injured and are being transported to Khun Yuam Hospital and Mae Chaem Hospital. However, the situation is difficult due to the road being cut off by the landslide.'

Two people with critical injuries were later transferred to Chomthong Hospital. Officials said rescue efforts were ongoing for other trapped villagers.

Typhoon Kajiki dumped torrential rains as it battered northern Thailand this week. It had earlier battered Vietnam, killing three and injuring at least 13 others.

The Thai Meteorological Agency said Kajiki was downgraded into a tropical storm after entering central Laos on Tuesday morning.

Flood warnings were issued across Thailand's north and northeastern regions as the northern weather office warned of heavy rain and possible gale-force winds until Wednesday.
