This is the heartwarming moment a passerby lowered a bucket into a canal in an attempt to rescue a stranded cat.

A woman spotted a group of worried locals gathering around to retrieve the orange feline who had fallen into the waterway in Bangkok, Thailand.

Footage shows one of the rescuers using a pole with a green plastic container attached to its end on July 7.

He can be seen lowering the stick and positioning the bucket in front of the kitten clinging to the soil.

However, they were not able to pull up the cat, prompting another man to climb down and gently place the animal into the basket.

The filmer said: 'Everyone gathered around. I saw the vendors, the motorcycle taxi drivers, and other passersby looking for ways to help the cat. I am so happy that they were able to rescue the animal.'

The cat did not sustain any injuries from the incident.
