Out-of-control SUV crashes into food stand injuring five people
This is the dramatic moment an out-of-control SUV crashed into a food stand, injuring five people in Thailand.
The SUV's gears were reportedly jammed before it suddenly accelerated onto the busy street in Samut Prakan province on the evening of January 5.
CCTV footage shows the vehicle speeding through the alley packed with pedestrians and motorcycle riders. It raced some 100 metres (330 feet) across the pavement before smashing into the shop, sending terrified sellers screaming in panic.
Furious locals were seen trying to drag driver Somkiat Thongprasert, 57, from his seat while others tended to an injured woman.
Police said three motorcycles and a bicycle were wrecked in the impact, with one motorbike trapped beneath the SUV, while a nearby shop was badly damaged.
Five people were rushed to Samut Prakan Hospital and Sikarin Samut Prakan Hospital, including one who suffered serious injuries.
The driver, Somkiat, said he had just finished a stopover at a fuel station but found that the car's gears were allegedly stuck, causing him to lose control.
He said: ‘I was not drunk during the crash, and I have not consumed alcohol in more than 30 years.'
Stall owner Kanya Sriwatthana, 45, said she barely had time to react when the SUV crashed into her stall.
She said: 'When I looked up, the car was already approaching. Luckily, I managed to dodge in time, but the neighbouring stall was also hit.'
Onlooker Korn Chinchot, 47, said the car suddenly shot forward as motorcyclists sounded their horns to warn people nearby.
He added: 'If I hadn't run to the other side, I would have been struck.'
Samut Prakan Police said they have collected evidence from the scene and hauled Somkiat to the police station for questioning and alcohol testing.
A police spokesman said: 'We will also check the dashcam and CCTV camera footage at the scene and in the surrounding area to find the true cause of this incident and proceed with legal action.'
Thailand has one of the world's worst road safety records. Ministers have set the goal of reducing fatalities from 32.7 deaths per 100,000 people to 12 per 100,000 people by the year 2027.
However, a lack of road safety education in schools along with notoriously easy driving tests, police failures to enforce road laws, and chronic under-investment in infrastructure, all appear to hamper the efforts.
