A 16-day elephant calf was found badly injured after getting stuck in a pit on the shores of Mahanadi in the Mahasamund district of Chhatisgarh in India.

A few villagers spotted the baby elephant lying injured and immediately informed the forest officials who then came to the rescue of the 15-day-old calf.

The officials had arrived the spot with the veterinary doctor who took almost two hours to administer the first aid to the little animal.

A large group of people had gathered to watch the injured elephant by then. The forest officials and the local police had a tough time dispersing the crowd and take the elephant safely to the forest shelter.

According to the vet, the calf is still in a critical state and is being monitored for the improvement of its health.

There are at least 16 elephants in the area out of which the baby is injured after falling into the pit.
